*REQUIRED: Keep the columns completely dry, AND SEAL PRIOR TO INSTALLATION. Also, raw columns are required to be sanded aggressively with #60 grit sandpaper prior to sealing. “Prime Columns are produced utilizing kiln dried after treatment (KDAT) Southern Yellow Pine (SYP). SYP is naturally hydroscopic and will pickup moisture very quickly from natural humidity in the air; therefore, products should be completely sealed prior to installation”.

Finishing Requirements And Recommendations

To effectively seal the columns from the elements: after sanding, apply an oil based primer with a quality exterior latex topcoat. If utilizing the pre-primed columns only the topcoat needs to be applied.

PLEASE BE AWARE that stains WILL NOT adequately protect Prime Columns from the elements. If staining you should expect natural wood movement due to moisture intrusion and UV degradation.

Required for staining:

1). Sand aggressively with #60 grit.

2). Recommended stain systems that provide better protection than most “off the shelf” products:

               A). Sashco

               B). Seal Once Marine

3). Follow all of the stain manufacturers recommendations including the maintenance requirements.

Again, if staining, expect natural wood movement due to moisture moving in an out and UV exposure.
